NPT coins can be destroyed, a process we refer to as “burning”. When someone burn their coins, they are reducing the supply of Neptune coins and thus making everyone else’s coins more valuable.
I know of two easy ways to burn tokens: set the receiver digest to 0, or set the lockscript to a program that’s guaranteed to fail execution. If either of those things are done, the money is unrecoverable and thus burned.
The three burns I’m aware of, presented chronologically:
