# Dev Update

## 1. Last Week by the Numbers

- [neptune-core](https://github.com/Neptune-Crypto/neptune-core)
  - Pull Requests: 1 opened, 2 merged
  - Commits: 14 merged into master

## 2. Stand-up Summary

- **Alan Szepieniec**

- **Thorkil Værge**

## 3. Technical Discussion

- **DeFi & Smart Contract Wallet Architecture:** Discussed architectural models for how wallets detect and process DeFi smart contract announcements. To maintain a clean core codebase, it was agreed that Neptune DeFi and related wallet logic will be handled within an overlay application rather than modifying the core reference implementation. Considered potential plugin and subscriber models where Neptune Core passes blocks to external plugins for scanning.
- **Application Networking Security:** Addressed a node concurrency vulnerability where internal channel lock releases were susceptible to blocking if a peer manipulated channel capacity. Discussed potential mitigation strategies, including releasing locks prior to internal channel dispatch and peer message throttling (with careful consideration around network sync performance impacts).
- **Succinctness Performance & Chunk Packing:** Evaluated VM performance bottlenecks caused by chunk unpacking overhead (~15,000 rows per input, expanding to over 1.5 million rows for 100 inputs and driving padded heights up to $2^{22}$–$2^{23}$). Deemed a mutator set schema change unfeasible due to hard fork requirements. Current evaluation paths focus on either dropping chunk packing entirely or transitioning exclusively to digest packing to keep proof constraints within practical limits.

## 4. Updates and Announcements

- Decision reached to maintain Neptune DeFi functionality strictly within overlay applications, keeping the core reference implementation isolated from specialized wallet logic.
